SOMAR INTERNAL DOSSIER

SUBJECT: DIRECTIVE THIRTEEN & THE LUCID THREAT

DATE: 1997

[OVERVIEW]

The world moves forward, cold and indifferent. Cities stretch upward, infrastructures tighten, and technology advances at a rate beyond its makers' control. Most would call it peace. SOMAR does not.

Beyond the narrow confines of perception, an anomaly festers. It presses against the fabric of reality, unseen by those unwilling to look. This is not speculation. It is a studied certainty.

SOMAR has operated in the shadows for four years, tasked with an objective neither recognized nor understood by the broader world. They are the last line between order and incursion, between reality and The Null Horizon.

[THE COUNCIL & DIRECTIVE THIRTEEN]

SOMAR is governed by The Council, an unseen authority responsible for overseeing all operations related to The Null Horizon. Their command is absolute, their identities obscured beneath layers of encryption and misdirection. Those within the organization follow without question. The cause is all that matters.

At the heart of SOMAR's mission lies Directive Thirteen—a neural convergence linking thirteen minds into a singular consciousness. Alone, a mind is limited. Together, Directive Thirteen perceives on a level no individual could achieve. Through their synchronization, SOMAR detects shifts in reality where others see nothing.

[THE LUCID THREAT]

The public has no language for the phenomenon SOMAR has studied. They are labeled as distortions, hallucinations, and anomalies. But SOMAR knows them for what they are: Lucids.

Lucids are not of this world. They do not move through time and space as living beings do. They exist outside the limits of human perception and are imperceptible in waking life. Their presence is felt, not seen—manifesting as electronic interference, shadowed corners that stretch too far, and reflections that ripple without motion. A disturbance, never directly observed but undeniably there.

The danger of the Lucids lies in The Null Horizon. It is only within dreams that their forms can take shape. And it is only within dreams that they can be eliminated.

SOMAR has identified that when a Lucid invades the subconscious of a sleeper, it becomes lethal. To die in a dream infected by a Lucid is to die in reality. The cause? Catastrophic brain failure—accompanied by the appearance of an unknown black matter consuming neural tissue. The process is irreversible. SOMAR has recorded over 112 confirmed cases of such events in the past year alone.

Lucids do not take a singular form. Each is distinct, and its manifestation is shaped by the subconscious of the infected. Some appear humanoid—distorted echoes of those once alive—while others defy all known biological structures. They move wrong. They break the logic of motion, slipping between states of existence.

SOMAR's operatives are trained to enter The Null Horizon and engage the Lucids where they can be fought. This is not an act of heroism. It is a calculated response. The only known way to destroy a Lucid is to confront it within the dream.

[ORIGINS OF DISCOVERY]

The first documented encounter with the Lucids was not through chance. It was the result of a government experiment.

Initial investigations began when military researchers encountered anomalies while studying victims of unexplained brain failure. The black matter found in their neural tissue did not correspond to any known biological substance. The deaths were abrupt—untraceable by conventional medical analysis.

Patterns emerged. The victims had reported vivid, intrusive nightmares before their deaths. Further study revealed these nightmares shared common distortions—unfamiliar figures, impossible landscapes, and a sense of presence beyond human comprehension.

The government's attempts to observe and analyze this phenomenon led to a series of classified tests. During these trials, the first direct contact with a Lucid occurred. The outcome was catastrophic. Personnel were lost. Records of these events are fragmented, heavily redacted, and locked away.

SOMAR was formed in the aftermath.

[FIELD OPERATIONS]

SOMAR operates in sectors abandoned by modern society—old factories, forgotten corridors, silent outskirts where the world has moved on. These places are not empty; they are where the anomalies appear.

The Null Horizon does not breach through walls and streets. It creeps in at the edges, distorting space in ways the average mind cannot process. Operatives report structures that lean when they shouldn't, corridors that stretch beyond their dimensions, and light bending in unnatural angles. The fabric of reality in these areas is thinner. And where it is thinner, the Lucids press in.

SOMAR's presence is not for containment. It is for elimination. When a breach is identified, the process is swift. Agents are deployed to locate the source—a sleeper infected by a Lucid. The sleeper is sedated and induced into deeper unconsciousness, allowing the operatives to enter The Null Horizon.

The process is volatile. Not all return, but those who do bring knowledge—patterns, weaknesses, evidence of structure behind the incursions. SOMAR is building a catalog of Lucid forms, tracking their behaviors, and studying their presence. They do not believe these beings act at random. There is an intelligence behind them.

The goal is not just to eliminate individual threats. It is to understand The Null Horizon. To determine the nature of this force before it overtakes the waking world entirely.

[CONCLUSION]

SOMAR remains operational. Surveillance continues. Patterns are forming. The data indicates an increase in activity across multiple sectors. Further incursions are expected.

Personnel are advised to remain on high alert. Field agents are to report any deviations in standard observation protocol. Any evidence of Lucid activity must be escalated immediately.

There is no established endpoint and no projected resolution. The objective remains: Monitor, engage, contain, and eliminate.

The Council has issued no further directives at this time.
